Hi Reader, I have so many great resources to share with you today! Updated: Social Justice Songs for Kids (with a new freebie!) When checking out my website stats recently, I saw one of the posts that people have really been flocking to lately is about social justice and protest songs for kids. It was definitely time to update this post with some more fantastic songs, and I realized there are so many great children's books that could be paired with most of the songs on the list. βRead the updated post on social justice songs for kids (I've included a YouTube video for each song right in the post!) Some of them are easy to teach kids to sing, and others might be best for just listening or have a little dance party. Also be sure to check out the new free resource I created for the song list. It has a link to the entire playlist on Spotify, plus children's books to match with (almost every) song. You can download it right here. (No need to fill out the form in the blog post, but if you know someone else who would like the freebie, please send them to the post to use the form.) The books in the freebie are great for helping kids understand the issues, movements, and artists behind the songs. New post: Children's books for all ages starring South Asian characters This new post is packed with picture books and chapter books for every kind of interest, with each book starring characters who have Indian, Pakistani, or Sri Lankan heritage. Most of the books take place in the United States. I created the post because often when we use a big category like "Asian American," we miss out on the incredible diversity of countries, cultures, religions, and histories within the huge continent of Asia. In the post, you'll find 22 book recommendations, including: π¨πΎβπ§πΎ A sweet story about a Sikh father and daughter who style their hair in matching ways. πͺΆAn imaginative tale about all that the discovery of a single feather can bring about. πΆ A stereotype-defying grandfather who introduces his grandson to the beauty of dance. π An intermediate reader chapter book starring an 8-year-old who's convinced she can get her parents to throw her an elaborate birthday party. β¨ Two fantastic, laugh-out-loud fantasy books rooted in Hindu mythology. βRead the blog post: Picture and chapter books starring South Asian charactersβ Happy reading, Rebekah Rebekah Gienapp (she/her/hers) | rebekahgienapp.com | Connect on Instagram | Coffees for Gaza | Knit 4 Justiceβ |

Hi Reader, The last week and a half has given me all the feelings, and I do mean ALL of them. You've probably heard that the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, perhaps the most important piece of civil rights legislation in the past hundred years. Just days later, the Tennessee State Legislature called a special legislative session to carve up Memphis' majority Black Congressional district. It was a three day clown show where legislators disrespected hundreds of protestors who showed...
Hi Reader, This July will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Now is a great time to start exploring U.S. history during the Revolutionary Era with kids in an honest and inclusive way. Truthfully, I'm on high alert for the propaganda-laced "resources" that kids may be exposed to, with the backing of the White House (I'm looking at you and your AI generated videos, Prager U Kids!) That's why I created a list of great children's books about the founding...
Hi Reader, Do you, your child, or someone they love have a disability? Approximately 1 in 4 Americans has a disabilty, but it's not something most of us talk with children about very often. I've been busy the last 2 weeks creating new resources and updating an old one to help you have conversations with kids of all ages so that all of us can better understand - and dismantle - ableism. (If you're new to the term, I'd sum up ableism as all the beliefs, behaviors, patterns, and laws in our...
