Hi Reader, I'm thrilled to let you know that my Anti-Bias Children's Book Calendar is back for 2026! I missed out on creating a book calendar for 2025 because it's honestly a huge project. I recommend a different social justice or anti-bias book for every day of the year, often matching them up with events that took place on that day in history. Making sure I match historical events, holidays, and heritage celebrations with the right books, while also including titles for a variety of ages and interests is kind of like a huge puzzle. In typical ADHD-fashion, each time I start a calendar I'm full of energy. About 70 percent of the way through I question why I started and how I will ever finish. Then, when I finally hit publish I'm elated! How the Anti-Bias Children's Book Calendar can help you If you're ready to revamp your bookshelves or just need fresh ideas for your next library visit, the calendar is the perfect tool for you. I've included tons of new books (and "new to me" books) that I've not yet reviewed on the blog or anywhere else. (If you've purchased past editions of my calendar, there are very few repeat books from year to year.) Tired of reading the same books every year for heritage months and holidays? The calendar will have plenty of new ideas for you. It also has lots of "on this day in history" moments perfect for learning about social justice, each matched with a book title. There are also plenty of lighthearted reads written by diverse authors sprinkled in to keep things from being serious all the time.
What's inside the calendar? Key dates in social justice historyDiscover the history you’ve never heard of, from the 1931 La Placita immigration raid in Los Angeles to the disability rights activists who occupied federal buildings in 1977. Along with each social justice event you’ll find a corresponding children’s book related to the topic. Cross-cultural understandingFill your shelves with books that will reduce children’s biases against others who are different from them in terms of gender, race, religion, family makeup, physical ability, and more. Holidays from many cultures and faithsLearn about Diwali, Rosh Hoshanah, Vaisakhi, Eid al-Fitr, and many other special days using the suggested kids’ books.
Heritage month book recommendations that dive beneath the surfaceFrom celebrations you’re likely already observing like Black History Month to ones you might not know about (Filipino Heritage Month, Deaf History Month, Arab American Heritage Month, Black Music Month, and more), the calendar has you covered with ideas for all ages. Justice issues unpackedDiscover age-appropriate stories that help children understand issues including racism, sexism, anti-gay bias, ableism, and environmental damage, along with our power to make change in the face of injustice. Joyful representationExplore dozens of light-hearted, joyful stories that provide joyful representation of kids whose identities are often marginalized by society. Brave leaders for social changeMeet brave leaders, young and old, famous and little known, with biographies of people who have made change for their communities. >>>>You can download a sample month of the calendar for free here. <<<< Have questions about the calendar? Hi Reader, I realized recently that most of the time, I enjoy reading middle grade books more than I enjoy reading books written for adults. There's just something about the blend of sincerity and complexity that makes me love books written for older elementary kids and young teens. In my last blog post of the year, I'm sharing my favorite middle grade books published in 2025, including: ✏️a hilarious book about two 5th grade writing and illustrating rivals, co-written by two of the most...
Hi Reader, It's time to share my favorite picture books that were published this year. This book list (and my favorite chapter books of 2025 list that I'll share next week) is the only one I work on all year-round. Hi Reader, The temptation to despair has been overwhelming this year. And I'm not going to lie; sometimes I've given into it. My city has been invaded by 1,500 federal agents and an additional 300 state troopers who are ripping families apart. Our governor has said this effort, inappropriately named the Memphis Safe Task Force, "will last forever." In November, federal officials played with the lives of poor children, cutting off food assistance and then announcing that once it was restored,...
